چکیده

This study used Functional Data Analysis (FDA) to analyse tongue articulation dynamics, more specifically the height and frontness of the tongue body and tip in the palatal vowels /i:, y:, 0ff:/ of two varieties of Swedish. Articulatory data were collected from nine speakers each of Gothenburg and Malmöhus Swedish. Standard z-score transformations were used for speaker normalisation. Results showed that the tongue articulation for /i:/ and /y:/ is generally similar, and significantly different from /0: ff / in both Malmöhus and Gothenburg Swedish. We also found a subdivision of Gothenburg Swedish into two subtypes, where type 1 resembled Malmöhus Swedish more. Significant differences in tongue body height were found between all varieties for all of the vowels, except for /y:/ between Gothenburg type 1 and Malmöhus Swedish.

Tongue articulation of front close vowels in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmöhus Swedish

Articulatory data were collected for the Swedish vowels /iː, yˌ, ʉ̟ː/ from nine speakers each of Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmöhus Swedish, and the tongue positions and their dynamics analysed using Functional Data Analysis (FDA). Results showed that the general tongue positions for /iː/ and /yː/ are similar and clearly different from /ʉ̟ː/ in all three dialects. Variation within the Stockholm ...

The Formant Dynamics of Long Close Vowels in Three Varieties of Swedish

This study compares the acoustic realisation of /iː yː ʉː uː/ in three varieties of Swedish: Central Swedish, Estonian Swedish, and Finland Swedish. Vowel tokens were extracted from isolated words produced by six elderly female speakers from each variety. Trajectories of the first three formants were modelled with discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients, enabling the comparison of the form...

Exotic Vowels in Swedish - An Articulographic and Acoustic Pilot Study of /iː/

This paper describes an articulographic and acoustic pilot study of the realisation of the vowel /iː/ in two regional varieties of Swedish. The study was carried out within the new research project Exotic vowels in Swedish – an articulographic study of palatal vowels [VOKART], which aims at increasing the empirical knowledge of vowel production in general, and extending our knowledge of the art...

Vowel category dependence of the relationship between palate height, tongue height, and oral area.

This article evaluates intertalker variance of oral area, logarithm of the oral area, tongue height, and formant frequencies as a function of vowel category. The data consist of coronal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences and acoustic recordings of 5 talkers, each producing 11 different vowels. Tongue height (left, right, and midsagittal), palate height, and oral area were measured in 3 ...

Investigation of coarticulation in continuous speech of Japanese

This study analyzed coarticulation involved in continuous speech based on articulographic data obtained from three Japanese male speakers. Distribution of the articulation points of vowels and consonants revealed that speakers might compensate for morphological differences in the hard palate by adjusting the location of vowel articulation points. To evaluate the effects of the left and right ph...
